It’s been several weeks since we arrived home from our trip bring Merva down from Canada. Except for the storm that kept us pinned down in Friday harbor it was a very good trip. We arrived in Tacoma and docked along the Foss Maritime Museum. We learned a lot about Merva. How she handled, what…
Category: Maintenance
Sold
Well the maintenance on Merva came to an abrupt halt as multiple buyers came on the scene – two on the same day. So refinishing the covering boards and annual varnish refresh is going to be done by the new owner as they see fit. We are taking on Euphemia II but nothing happens until…
Sounder, Covering Board
Sounder The replacement sounder arrived today. It was already configured for the same transducer so all I had to do was plug it in and see if it works – and it did. This confirmed that the original sounder was no longer working – despite outwardly looking fresher. It was hard tossing the old one…
Taking Stock
Some of the things on my ‘to do’ list are trivial. ensure pots and pans are a complete/well rounded set ensure spices are topped up and selection is complete
Anchor Locker
I had to use the extra rode recently and it got tangled. This happened despite the neat coil I had it in. So pulled the anchor and rode out and reloaded it with the rope loosely fed to the floor first and the chain on top of it. This is how it be if the…
Teak Oil
I like to add teak oil to the deck every September. The teak is old and dry and sucks up the oil readily. Helps a lot when the rainy months kick in and by late spring it is back to being grey again. I did it a month early this year as I expect to…
Cockpit
The deck/sole/floor in the cockpit is looking tired. I have started scraping the old varnish off with cabinet scrapers and a heat gun. The varnish is very thick and its slow going. I may resort to a chemical remover – will see. I switched from the cabinet scraper to the common hardware store style with…
New Interior Panel
Replaced the starboard interior panel since I had it off to route the new steering cable. I decided to do it in two pieces so it can be removed (at some point in the future) without having to remove the bed box trim.
Solar Charge Controller
The existing charge controller got fried due to a design condition having to do with loosing battery power when the sensor and charge wires are touching. I decided to replace the controller with one which does not have such an issues/trap. The new controller is from xantrex – the same brand as the inverter/shore-charger.
Waste Water Pump
The fuse went on the waste (black) water pump. Replaced the fuse and it went again. I could do a rebuild on the pump but I decided to simply replace the pump.
